I need to know if there is a difference in the water pumps on the 351 W. I just had a race engine built and when I set the pulleys there was a 0.5 inch difference, with the water pump being to far out from the crank pulley. Does a shorter pump exist. The engine block code calls it an HO.
Race engine, and water pump... Most race engines use electronic pumps. That being said, I would assume you are using an aftermarket damper, correct? S.F.I. rated to I am sure... Being it is an after market damper, and you are sure you have the corect water pump, you must have wrong pullies or they need shimmed, which I would advise against...
When i stated a racing engine I should have said, a 400+HP street rod. The engine is in a frame off restoration of a 1952 Ford pickup. I am finally retired and always wanted to do this with my son. If we do any racing it will be drag strip on occasion. Frame has a dakota front clip with rack and pinion steering, lowered 4 inches. will weigh 2800 when finished. All of that said we are stumped with the water pump or balancer issue. The pulleys are surpentin type and lined up when we purchased the engine. The water pump is new and could be wrong, but the local parts houses cannot seem to find the shorter one, if it exists.
Where was the original engine sourced? There are a couple of different lengths, but I'm not sure the application where each was used, except for the really short pump used on explorers.
If you have a sfi rated damper, after market it, may require a spacer specifically for that damper. I have a professional products damper it required one of their spacers for my lower pulley, I do have a V belt system and my pulleys would not line up til I bought that spacer. Check with mfg. of the damper. Good luck!
I also have a proffesional products damper w/spacer and I`m running an Eldebrock aluminum h2o pump for a 5.0 and Ford underdrive pullies for serpentine belt on my stroked 351.
