Need Transmission Cooler Recommendation
I have a 1997 F-350 CC 460 E40D ~93,000 miles and carry a 9.5' Lance Camper that weighs ~3,000 lbs loaded. I bought it in 2007 with about 89,000 miles. I recently installed a Scangauge II to monitor transmission temps. Last weekend I drove from Ventura, CA (sea level) to Mammoth, CA (8,000 ft) and noticed my transmission temps mostly ranged from 200-220 F. There was a strong headwind most of the time and I kept it at 65 mph. The transmission ran fine (no hunting, stayed in OD).
I took a side trip out of Lone Pine to Whitney Portal (long steep climb). I made it about half way but turned around when the transmission temp climbed to 230F.
I've read (mostly from Mark K.) that these temps are normal, but want to add a transmission cooler and still keep the stock one. The Tru-Cool Max seems to be too large to fit with the stock cooler in place.
I've already set up the truck to tow my Jeep Wrangler, but want to add a second cooler and probably have the transmission flushed before I try to tow the Jeep since I don't have any maintenance history.
Can anybody recommend a transmission cooler that can fit with the stock cooler already there?
Thanks,
Rich
