whats up guys? I just joined the forum and I'm trying to track down this problem (I did do search but didn't find what I was looking for) :
I have a 2000 f150 4.2, it has 207k miles on it and still running strong, the only thing is I live in so. cal. and it's hot as hell here. Well the other day I was sitting at a stop light and the A/C just quit blowing cold, I checked the fuse and it was popped so I changed it, all was fine while at an idle but as soon as I got going it popped the fuse again. I checked the pressure in the A/C system and it was low so i recharged it with the do it yourself stuff at wal mart, again while it was at idle it blows real cold but when I get going down the road it pops the fuse (confused)
Most likely is an intermittent short in the compresser clutch coil. The coil keeps the clutch energized against the rotor on the clutch shaft, which turns the compresser shaft. This coil is insulated from the factory, but as the years(and usage) wear on,the clutch bearings wear.when they wear they allow the clutch plates to wobble to a certain extent, and once worn past a certain point will cut into the coil causing a short. If this is the case, the clutch coil can be replaced without evacuating the system.Youll just need an 8 dollar tool from autozone, and a new coil.Hope this helps.
If your referring to the compresser coil, its directly behind the compresser clutch. You can pull the clutch, and the coil will be bolted onto the front of the compresser.Autozone sells a tool to remove the clutch for about 8 bucks.
