Here is what I have found concerning the different filters. When I first bought my Bronco, I got a filter to change the oil. I ended up with the FL-1A filter, which didn't fit. The 820-s filter is shorter and wider than the 1A filter. They do both have different threads, as well as different hole diameters for the threaded portion. Come to find out, it was due to the oil cooler adapter. Ford started the change in filters around '94 with the oil cooler adapter, and then on the new modular engines found in today's trucks. Part of the reason is I cannot fit the taller filter into the hole in the front cross member, even if the threads were to match up. From what I understand, the 820-s filter was introduced because of less room from the filter, and they have just incorporated it into all the newer engines to maintain compatibility. My expedition uses the same 820s filter, but has tons of room for a filter thanks to the relocation/cooler mount.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Feb-02 AT 10:54 PM (EST)]My 1990 Bronco's 302 uses the FL-1A filter, but it is a major pain trying to get the old filter out....unless you raise up the vehicle.Best way to get access to it is from underneath the hood, and reaching down.My Dad's 1994 Bronco's 351 used a FL-820S filter-it is easier to get to.My 1993 F-250 4x4 I had years ago had a 351 in it,which had the FL-1A filter on it.Not easy to access, while on your back ,from underneath the truck.Still,it was easier to manuver out than the '90 Bronco's.The 460 engines oil filter position I like best.Up front, easy to get at."You can get a FL-1A filter out from underneath a Bronco(a friend tells me),all you need is to raise the truck up on a lift." Oh? You mean like the invisible one in the driveway......I wish I had a lift......and a REALLY big garage!:7
There must have been a variety of filter installations in the mid-1990's. My 1994 F-150 4x4 with the 302 takes the FL1A, easily changed from above. There is no engine oil cooler, maybe that makes the difference. When I had the '94 Chevy 1500 V-6, it had a factory oil cooler and a very small diameter filter mounted 90 degrees on the cooler adapter, making it a little harder to reach. I like the setup on some German cars a lot better. The filter is not a spin-on, but is mounted in a solid cast housing right on top. Just remove a bolt, lift the cover, and lift out the filter, drop in the new one and replace the cover, all front-and-center under the hood.
I recently started opening my used filters (hacksaw from Walmart- $2.97 - I know- this will put cuttings in the filter, but it is sufficient for my level of scientific observation) After switching from dino to synth oil in my wife's car, the filter contained black grit between each pleat. Hopefully the crankcase is cleaned out now and next time there will be less black grit.
I have a 1996 ford f150 4x4 5.0 and I just changed my oil but I seen that my oil filter that I got was a little bigger then the one that was on there but I feel like I got the wrong kind. The oil filter I got for it is motorcraft FL-1A
