I am overdue on cleaning or replacing the air filter on my 2004 6.0L Excursion. I bought the truck last August and just looked at the filter for the first time in awhile.
From what the air filter looks like, I think it's a Volant 5152. I know this is the cleaner for it but I want to have a backup for while it is drying and I need help determining what fits. I'm not sure what kind of cold air intake my X has. This is all I can find for Volant CAI kits and that shows a blue 61503 filter. I either want to get a paper filter to use as a backup during cleaning, or if paper is expensive and/or if you guys think my Volant filter is on it's last leg, I'll just get a new reusable.
Here are some pictures. In summary, I'm curious if I should replace my air filter and in any case, what temporary or permanent replacement would fit my CAI. Thanks in advance for the help!
The stock air cleaner specifically or just a dry filter? Because there does seem to be a handful of other dry filter options.
So it looks like my CAI setup still takes a stock size filter? Because the Motorcraft filter looks roughly the same shape and size.
No, I think you'd have to go back to stock plumbing. The stock unit hooks in the middle of the plumbing between the cold air inlets (yes the stocker is a CAI) and the intake tube. This same discussion has gone on with the Dmaxes as they also run a Donaldson stock filter. One thing the 2 groups can agree on is testing has proven both units are good for flowing up through about 500 HP, and they out filter everything else...
Meant to post this right after I looked at your picts: it looks like your degas is puking, or is that old stains? Do you monitor your engine vitals with anything besides the worthless dash gauges?

I don't think I really want to redo the whole plumbing. I just need the best filter that will fit my current setup.

I have had to add coolant twice in the past 2 months (a gallon altogether). Twice there has been a big spot on my concrete driveway that has lasted a few days and then the coolant was low. But every time I've opened the cap, it's been under pressure even after a day or two of sitting. About 4 months ago I took the hoses off to get to the FICM but it seemed to go back together just fine. What specifically are you seeing and do you have any ideas of what could be going on? Thanks so much!
EDIT: To answer the second part of your question, my truck has an Edge programmer and there's a lot to keep an eye on but I do try check up on the ECT and EOT's from time to time (especially if I think I may have lost coolant).
Just get a replacement filter because the one in the picture is done.
That is my thinking too... The consensus seems to be to stay away from the reusable oiled filters so I'm trying to find out what dry filter will fit my truck's setup.
Only fill the degas bottle to the min line that is the new full mark. Your cap for the bottle may need to be replaced it could be weak. The other possibilities will need to be explained by someone else that knows more than I do because I don't want to steer you wrong.

Are you running any tunes on the edge or just using it to watch things? A gallon is a significant amount of coolant that is going somewhere -- what I saw was residue (white drip marks) coming off the degas from the cap area. Could come from being over full and/or a weak cap, or head gaskets starting to go. If you are tuned, I'd put it back to stock until you figure that out...

It runs in towing mode (I am yet to tow anything though). The previous owner did have head studs done at the Ford dealer 4.5 years ago. I'll for sure try a new cap. Here's what my driveway looked like two months ago (all other fluid levels were normal):
