Enginge Tapping... while parked!

Hi Folks,
Woke up this morning to the most obnoxious tapping sound coming from the engine compartment of my 2000 F-250 V10 truck. I didn't have much time to look at it before leaving for work but here is what I was able to determine:

Sound emitted while truck is parked and off, it is a constant tap-tap-tap but the frequency varies.

Sound coming from a cylindrical object attached all the way to the side of the engine compartment on the driver side.

After starting the truck the noise stopped, I only ran it for minute before I shut it off and went to work (in a different vehicle).

I have now heard from a neighbor that the noise is back, I intend to go home and find out what the part is that is making the noise. I tried to find a reference diagram online but no luck.

Any know what the part is or have you ever encountered this before?

Thanks

I should also add that it looked like a horn to me but the harness connecting to it did not look electrical at first glance.

With that description, it's hard to help. Take a picture

It could be a bunch of things. Evaporative emissions canister, cruise control servo, (although neither should make noise when the truck is off), even an aftermarket car alarm. The alarm horn sounds about right.

And WELCOME to FTE!

It's apparent you have hit the Travelocity traveling gnome. PLEASE search the underside of your truck, there is still time to save him!!

LOL! Now THAT is funny!!!

Without knowing what "cylindrical object" you're talking about, it's hard to say. If it's loud enough for your neighbor to hear it, I'm gonna guess with Krewat and say it's an alarm speaker gone haywire (or the alarm system causing the speaker to "tap"). A slight electrical pulse will make them "tap" versus wailing, had that happen on an old van my folks used to have...

geedo: I needed a bit of humor today so don't take it the wrong way. I'd need to look at a V10 to see what's on that side to give you somewhere to start.

That was pretty damn funny HA , but not as funny as the actual problem... or embarassing I should say.

Krewat and wizardsr were spot on, I went home to look at the object (still don't know what that is as I cannot find a good engine reference in the service manual). As I was looking to see if there was an electrical connection to it I noticed a siren had been installed by a previous owner just above the object. A good pair of snips was all it took to 'fix' the problem. Thanks for the replies guys

Thanks for the welcome to FTE Krewat, I am sure more stupid questions will be asked from this end

Uh, I'd still figure out why that thing was doing what it was doing. The alarm could be one of those starter-interruptor sorts, and you'll be stranded when it decides you should be starting the vehicle.
