my buddy called me earlier today for some help.It appears his 2000 f250 sc lb v10 4x4 needed a set of fornt brakes. When he removed the bolts that hold the caliper to the bracket he noticed that the slide seemed siezed into the caliper mount bracket. When he tried to remove the slide out of the bracket the head snapped off leaving most of the slide stuck inside the bracket.Has anyone ever seen this happen?..In my short time in work on a plethora of different vehicles ive never seen this happen, though i have always been a big fan of greasing the day lights outta the brake slides. How would one try to remove the siezed slide while salvaging the bracket?..I said just go to a junk yard and pickup another bracket and get 2 new slides but i like a challenge, Sometimes. What are your thoughts?.. Thanks
It was happening on the road with the rear brakes on the 94-6 Impala/Caprice. It's not that terribly uncommon, when you put enough force on something, it has to give somewhere.
I would pull the bracket and if I had access to oxy/acetylene, I would try to heat the grease and air up behind the pin. Hopefully you could get the grease to burn and the pressure rise enough to shoot the pin out. If not, I might either drill and tap the bracket for a zerk fitting to pump grease in behind the pin and use hydraulic pressure to force it out, or last ditch, drill/tap the pin and pull it with a bolt and socket.
Or go to Advance Auto and buy a brandy new one for $18.Same thing happened to me.Worked on it for about an hr since I did not think anyone stocked one.Took less time to run and get the new one. Sometimes a challenge just ain't worth the time.
