Hey guys, I posted this awhile back in the 2004-2008 section and got no response so I figured I'd try here. My problem is my cruise control on my 2004 F-150 Supercrew 4x4 only works when it is cool outside, although yesterday I was driving from Phoenix to home in the south part of the state with it being 112 degrees outside and it did work for about 10 miles but this has never happened before.
I'm thinking maybe a solenoid but I wouldn't even know where to look. Anyone have any ideas? Suggestions? I've talked to mechanics at two different Ford dealers and none of them have ever heard of this happening.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated since I'm going to drive it to LA in a couple weeks and it won't be any fun with out the cruise control.
Any air bag error lights? A common problem is the clockspring behind the steering wheel wears out. This transmits the signals for the cruise buttons on the steering wheel and also the airbag.
Since none of the inputs the PCM needs for speed control operation is supposed to be a temperature-related sensor, the only thing left is that one of the inputs has become intermittent when it gets too warm.
I'd suspect one of the following: De-activator switch (install a jumper to bypass it), the fluid float in the brake fluid reservoir, the BPP switch, possibly the clock-spring or steering wheel switches, a fault in the ABS system, the TPS, or the DTR sensor.
The PCM should be logging any failure of the speed control system. To prevent wasting time and money, you'll have to scan it with a scanner that is capable reading "manufacturer-specific" codes. The cheaper ones only support generic codes.
There is no Air Bag malfunction and it was scanned at the dealer for a transmission malfunction and they checked for anything on that and nothing came up. So maybe it is one of the other things you suggested.
