I have read all of the posts to the thread of a possible blown head gasket. That being said my truck is using engine coolant. Actually quite a bit. It is not spitting black or white smoke out of the exhaust. I have noticed that the tempature guage is running a little hot and the the truck tried overheat once when I first noticed the coolant low. Quickly pulled over and got the temp back down. The engine driven fan will kick in every now and then as a indicator that the fluid is low. Pull over and add about a gallon of water and all is good. I have a flashpaq tunner and have it set on economy mode. I have also read about how to check the EGR cooler as well. How much of a slope do you need to have to check this? I have about a 3-4 degree slope in my driveway. If I need to replace studs How much money am I looking at? I don't think I will be able to use my warranty since it expired about a month ago which really sucks since I have only 52K on the engine. Any suggestions?
You really do need to include details on your truck when you post. Most folks that help will do so willingly, but draw the line at having to look up details on your ride. I know I usually do.
This morning, I am not busy, so I looked up that you have a 2004. I assume you bought it ( or the original purchaser did so) in June or July of 2004? If so - you are right on the warranty. Your tuner mau have voided that anyway.
The studs alone are $600 if you really shop around. The installation can easily be $2.5k to $3k. Maybe someone that has had it done will jump in. Be sure to check te heads for flatness and cracks. The stock head gasket is great - no need for aftermarket IMO.
One big decision you have is "how much other stuff to do?" when you decide to do the head studs. Example - EGR system delete, turbo oil feed and drain, etc.
Sorry about that one. It was 1100PM and i wasn't thinking clearly. Afriend of mine who has the first run 03 6.0 PSD has been round and round with Ford when his waranty was bordering on the end and was told he was out of luck. I hope I may be able to persuade Ford to honor the waranty. We will see.
My (old) 06 was going through antifreeze. Very subtle but I did take it in, probe done to exhause and yep blow head gasket. Happened at 65k. Warranty did cover but they would not allow an upgrade to better head bolts. They know the stock bolts stretch yet would not allow change. I guess it depends on which dealer you take it to. Back to cost the above amount of around 3K is about what I was quoted as the average cost. Needles to say I sold the 06 while it was being worked on. This is my 3rd 6.0 that I have had and each one has had their fair share of problems. Bummer since they are nice truck, just lost faith in the motor. Went back to a 7.3 for now. I honestly dont like all the emmisions out there involved with the newer diesel's. I'm going to run with this one for awhile and see were ford goes with 6.4 or other.
you can get arp head studs for $400 a serveral places. According to a post by tex the other day there is a new deal out by ford that says they will install arp studs under warranty. They will even cover the cost of the studs. I guess ford finnaly realized that the TTY bolts just aren't good enough

I sure would like to confirm that information....anyone else heard/know this for a fact?
Well droped the truck off today at the Ford Dealer. Won't know anything for a week or so since they are backed logged on trucks. I'll keep everyone posted on how bad it will be.

I hope when u ask them, Ford, for mercy that you tell them you were running a tuner. You want mercy, I'm sure they would want the truth.

I,too, would be interested in hearing chapter and verse about a plan for Ford to eat the cost of ARP studs. Particularly in the wake of Ford dealerships not knowing anything about how to get the coolant test strips that fomoco sent jillions of letters out regarding.
Does anyone have documentation that Ford is using ARP studs for waranty claims? They tore into my truck and found just a blown head gasket on both sides with no engine damage. I need to provide some type of documentation to the dealer.
