i`am trying to put together a mass air 460. i`am installing it in a 2000 e350 van and making it 4x4 with 35 inch tires (6 inch lift). the van had a triton 5.4 and the lower end froze up at 86,000 miles. i now have the van completely rewired for a 96-97 460 california emissions (96-97 f truck) or 460 under 8600 lbs (96 van). my problem is the very rare california emissions mass air 460 uses a crank position sensor mounted somewhere on the front timing cover (have not seen one yet) and is triggered from something on the front of the crank. i`am not sure if it reads off the balancer or the crank spacer (again havent seen one yet) what i`am looking for is someone who either has a mass air truck or van , or someone who has seen this set up and can tell me how the crank position sensor mounts to the timing cover ( is there an extra bolt boss cast into the timing cover then drilled and tapped to mount the sensor like 95-97 351w) does the harmonic damper have a tone ring pressed on like a 302 -351w or does it have a special crank spacer to trigger it. without the crank sensor hooked up it is going to through a trouble code and start playing with my ignition timing. i have a ford part number for a timing cover but i cant seem find anyone that knows what the difference is from the older one to the california one. F6TE 6059 GA is the part number i have found. the older ones use a e7??-????-?? number. i suspect there is a difference. aftermarket covers say they work but i see no extra spot to bolt on a sensor so i would say they are for federal emissions engines and probley wont work for my set up. also there is a different part number for the balancer for 96-97 460`s. has anyone seen what i`am talking about ? does anyone have the parts i need and want to sell them . any info you guys can give me would be great. or pic`s anything. i cant finish putting the engine together or install it till i have the problem solved. my van just sits here waiting for the HUGE BLOCK to fire up and rattle the neighbors windows (they are going to hate my loud exaust) they thought my small block with headers was loud lol
The pictures pretty much tell the story. The crank sensor wires separate from the wiring harness on the fuel rail. (A plastic clip attaches the wires to the head.) The sensor is mounted behind the timing pointer. The trigger is mounted to the external balancer.
My factory service manual lists a California only "shield/timing pointer" part #6023. It calls the balancer/trigger a "spacer/trigger wheel" California only with part #6M265. The timing cover and the balancer are the same for all states. The part numbers came right out of my service manual, so I am not sure if they are correct/current.
I hope that this answers most of your questions. Let me know if you need any more detail.
thats what i was looking for. looks like the aftermarket universal cover does not have the extra bolt boss for mounting the sensor (thats what i was afraid of) cover has a f6te number . so now all i have to do is locate the correct parts. i thank you for taking the pictures. and that engine is real clean for the year. i`am sure the rest of the truck is in the same conditiion.
the engine i`am using is a 95 so it does`nt have the correct parts. should be real fun finding them . maby i will get lucly and someone from the board might have that stuff laying around and will sell it. thats the 1st mass air 460 i have seen . what kinda mpg does it get i would guess about 12 city. i`am going to use a v10 throttle body in the van so i dont have duel tubes on the throttle body. then i can either use the stock 00 van air box and meter or fab up a cold air intake setup using the k&n mass air kit for a truck.
i have a 95 engine and e4od out of a motorhome that burned 24,000 miles orignal. that should be plenty of power for a 4x4 van

Your truck looks like it's been kept in a museum! LOL
Is the rest of life in CA clean like that?
If so, I've got to get out of the dirty NE.
Stunned.

Glad to help with the pics.
My service manual only lists one part number for ‘97, so hopefully Ford used the same timing cover for ‘96/’97 in all 50 states? It will still be a challenge to locate the other parts though.
My truck is a '97 F-350 crew cab/long bed /460/E4OD/4x4/4.11 gears /33x12.50 tires that I use mostly for towing a 30' fifth wheel toyhauler to the desert. I am the original owner and the best mpg that I have ever seen is 11 something. Usually in the 8-10 mpg range and about 6 mpg towing the fifth wheel.
The engine is clean because I just finished (500 miles) installing new camshaft, lifters, valve springs, rocker arms, pushrods, ported intake manifold, timing chain/gears, water pump, etc. It's not usually that clean...The rest of the truck is respectably clean for a ’97 though.
why the cam change? did it go bad or just wanted to upgrade? ya it will be hard to find. i`am in michigan a long way from cali most people dont even know what i`am talking about. i have a 97 351w with the same set up in a 92 e350. timing cover is only 96-97 and the trigger wheel is pressed on the damper (no crank weight). i was going to try making my own trigger setup using the wheel from a 351 but the 460 wheel is concave and the 351 is flat. it just wont work. hopefully more people read this post and i might get lucky and find someone with the parts i need. i`am probley asking to much lol . i do thank you for the help could not have been better pics. that HUGE BLOCK 460 you have is real nice. i have 4 of them but none look that nice (not yet)

I debated selling my truck and buying a diesel, but decided to put a few bucks into mine instead. It just turned 100k miles and knew that it was time to replace the timing chain, etc. and while I was in there I might as well...once you get started it is kind of difficult to stop. I was looking for a little more torque to get my fat butt over the mountain passes, so I installed a mild cam. I already had headers/exhaust, so the cam was a sensible next step. Overall, I am very happy with the results; I dyno'd at 229 hp and 331 torque. Not too bad for a smog legal engine with 100k miles on it that was only rated at 245 hp/400 torque from the factory.
what i`am doing with this van is putting this 460 in it in 97 stock configuration for now so i can get the bugs worked out of the power and drive train in 2wd . once i have it running correctly then i can install the dana 60 front end , the transfercase, get the drive shafts made, have the gas tank shortned 10 inches (front to clear t case) misc brackets ect. once i have all that complete i`am building a stroker 557 to put in it but i want it fuel injected and overdrive. going to use cobra jet style heads and intake manifold but i have to have injector bungs welded on the intake and then bolt on the upper intake plenum from efi manifold so i can use factory engine controls ect. you cant make huge power with the efi heads so i have to use carb style ones. the object of making it mass air is so i can run a tweecer tuner to adjust for mods and the 97 ecm will do that for me. shooting for around 500 hp. i have a 86 truck 460 that is going to be the stroker it should run pretty good when i`am done and as money alows. just trying to do 1,000,000 things at once. i only have 3000 total in the 2000 van so far. thats with buying the van ,the 4x4 front axel ,and the low miles drivetrain. the only thing i dont have yet is the transfercase but i will get that when the time comes. the paint job is going to be urban camofloge (grey ,white, black ) van is white with no windows
giving my post 1 more bump to maby find someone on the board who might have the parts laying around or knows someone who does for my project. timing cover, crankshaft counterweight with trigger wheel and the timing pointer from california emissions 460 96-98. anyone that has these parts and wants to sell them or might have seen them in a salvage yard and can get them for me i have cash (reasonable) these parts are holding up my engine install. any help would be great. thanks to Dezertracer there are now pic`s of the parts. thanks for reading
Replaced motor mounts/transmission mounts/harmonic balancer motor still shakes when i put it in gear could it be the weight behind the balancer might be offset or bad truck runs great other than shaking really bad
