New to the forum and need some help with a power steering issue. I replaced the gear box and power steering pump on my 76 F100 4x4. I turned wheels while the truck was off the ground and filled with fluid. Drove the truck about 10 miles and then no power steering. I think the pump just went out. Put new pump on and let the truck idle and filled with fluid until full. When i shut the engine off fluid poured out of punmp filler neck. I think it was over full. I drove it some and it worked great. Then all the sudden it was hard to turn and noisy. What is going on. Anyone else ever had this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
yes I've had that happen, in my case it was caused by air in the system, check your fluid level again(WHEN HOT) and add more as necessary. keep cycling the wheels left and right while doing so.
You can do it both ways, but you definately need to keep turning the wheels back and forth to get the air out of the system. It can take quite a while to do sometimes.
Had similar problem, If you search, you will see that I asked about it a couple weeks ago. Even after "purging the system" there was still a bit of air in it. I had to drive it about a hundred miles before all the air worked its way out.
