Oil Comparison Study

Greetings!

I have been following the Dino vs. M1 thread on and off since joining this board. As I have recently ordered a 2003 Ford F150, I want to ensure I get the best protection for my investment. I did a search for "motor oil"+"comparison" on Google and found the following link:

http://www.vtr.org/maintain/oil-overview.html

Please note the editor's comment:

Editor's Note: This information appears to have been posted in a public message to rec.motorcycles. I have not been able to verify the accuracy or source for this file.

I was curious as to whether anyone can verify the information in this document, as it seems quite informative and does not slag any particular brand of oil for being bad (I myself use Valvoline 5W30 All Climate, which actually scored in the lower half of this study). By posting this, I'm not trying to add more fuel to the fire of this debate, but merely trying to help everyone make a more informed choice when it comes to motor oil.

The information in the study you found is fairly accurate. Unfortunately it is also fairly old, 5-7 years I think.

You'd be much better served to download the current product data sheets from the oil company's web sites for the particular brands you're interested in using rather than relying on that old comparison. That way you'll get information for the latest API SL oil, and not the pre-SJ stuff.

Oil Comparison Study

Hey,

Thanks for the info. I found that today and was not aware of how old the article was. I will have a look at the manufacturer's websites as you suggested.

Thanks,

Oil Comparison Study

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Jul-02 AT 08:33 PM (EST)]Have you guys ever seen the Motor Oil Bible - in my opinion, it is an excellent reference book about oils - and it is very cheap ($9.80 download or $14.65 on CD). Yes, I know, the guy who wrote this book sells Amsoil, but not even 10% of the book even mentions Amsoil - in my opinion, it's got all kinds of great stuff about oils in it. I have never used any Amsoil stuff, but I think he did a fabulous job on this book.

Also, see this link for oil filter info:

Click on the link "Oil Filters Overview" at the bottom of the page for the opinions on recommended oil filters.

One last oil info link is [link:www.bobistheoilguy.com|Bob is the Oil Guy]. Thanks (sorry if any of this is old news).
