I am looking at buying a 1984 F-250 2wd pickup. I ma mechanically inclined, and used to work on cars, but it has been about 10 years. I am wondering if there is anything specifically i should be looking for? are there any major problem areas with these trucks? It has a 351W and a manual transmission. the current owner says there is a intermittent staring problem, and thinks it is a fuel pump or electrical, i suspect it is more electrical. also i assume these trucks are carborated? Also is there a in tank fuel pump or just the one that runs off the engine? I don't know much about the truck yet i am going to look at it tomorrow. thanks in advance.
i dont know alot about the 84 but my fuel pump is not in the tank but on the fram under the drivers door then it runs into the fuel filter. I have an 88 f250 4x4 and it has the 351w with the zf s5-42 man. tranny in it. Mine had 160k miles on it when i picked it up. I've priced rebuilding the tranny and doing a mine rebuild on the engine such as seals and stuff and for the tranny it's between 300-500 for the tranny and about the same for the engine. Thats just seals and some minor parts. I would check the suspension and things like that... That has a tendency to start adding up when replacing those parts. When I was looking at these types trucks I was asking myself, is there any knocking in the engine when I drove it, is it shifting okay, my pops told me to take the engine oil cap off, while it's running, and see if there is pressure pushing my hand off. He said that if it did there is something wrong with the engine and will require to pull it out and rework it. It all depends on how much work and money you want to put into it. The main thing is engine, tranny, and suspension... well that and the rust condition of the frame, make sure its not really eatin away. Not sure this is all helping but its what I was lookin for before buying my ford.... Post some picture of it
I've got an 83 F250, the fuel pump is mechanical, on the engine block. Except for rust, most faults will be pretty evident once you take it for a drive - steering, clutch, brakes, engine fuming etc. But look for rust in the chassis, radiator support, cab floor & mounts area.
the pump on my '84 explorer's on the frame and also carb'd. I'm sure the starting problem is something simple(mine chokes for a few minutes before starting but I can thank Advance Auto for that one).
