how come some GTX cans have a light green cap and others are dark?
also why is the oil in some lighter than others?
why do some cans with the dark oil have sediment?
I've noticed they have different color caps with different weights. 10W-30 will have a green cap, while 20W-50 will have an orange cap. I haven't really noticed different colors of the oil itself, but maybe different weights will have different colors too.

Not good, that's one reason why I switched to Mobil One.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Jul-02 AT 11:32 PM (EST)]When you switched to Mobil 1, how many miles did you have on your truck ? Any leaks start ? Don't really HAVE to flush it or anything, do ya ?
Hey, Zip, FWIW I bought my truck used late last year with 122,000 miles on it, switched to Mobil 1 right after I brought it home, now with almost 135K miles, no oil consumption or leaks, uses maybe a quart every 4,000 miles. Runs like a clock. I absolutely need to get 200,000+ miles out of it before a rebuild and using M1 is my insurance policy.
The original M1 formula from 15-20 years ago did occasionally cause oil leaks when used in older vehicles, I guess they'll never live that down. Not an issue with the "modern" formula and engine seal materials.

Castrol GTX is all I've used since 1990 in 6 different vehicles (including the wife's cars) and I've had zero major mechanical problems. I'm sure that has alot to do with vehicle quality and many or most name brand oils could have performed as well, but I'm sold.

How come one case of 10W30 contains slightly darker or lighter colored oil than the next??? Thought I would throw that in. I see this all the time where I work. It can go from light brown to dark brown from one bottle to the next. I'm not trying to put the oil down becasue I think it is a fairly good oil.

Oops, sorry I took so long to post. I started using Castrol syn oil when I got the truck used in 95. It had almost 18,000 miles on it. I used the Castrol stuff until about two years ago then switch to Mobil one. No leaks and I didn't flush the engine when I got the truck or when I switch oils.
I've heard some people saying that their engine started leaking when they switch to a syn oil, but the only time my engine leaks is when I pull the oil plug out.
I have used castrol since mid 70's, starting in British sports cars.
I have put 265,000 miles on a 76 Blazer, 128,000 on a 76 Jeep CJ5,
185,000on my wife's first trooper, 145,000 on her second trooper,150,000 on 85 f150, and have 174,000 on 88 f150.
I change oil every 5,000 miles , unless I run in dusty or hot climate.
By the way, the guy I sold blazer to ran it for another year before rebuilding it, and the jeep is still running after 6 years. the blazer guy switched oils!, the jeep guy did not!!
Just my 2 cents.
