I have 130k on my stock 4x4 HD F-250 PowerStroke and had the transmission serviced a couple months ago. The truck has worked hard many times after servicing and before this incident last weekend. I was hauling a moderately loaded trailer for 2hrs and approx. 100 miles. When I got to the destination, had fluid coming out of the lower end of the bell housing. I determined that I had probably lost 1/2 qt. After the truck sat 2 days (and being in a remote location with no additional fluid available), I did the return trip with no leakage. I've since cleaned it up and serviced the 1/2 qt. and have no leakage. Any idea of the cause? How often does an E4OD need to be rebuilt? Thanks.
The front seal on the trans is known to leak when it gets hot. After it cools off the
leak will stop. It will do this a couple times before the seal goes belly-up for the last time.
There is a revised seal that corrects this problem but the trans needs to come out to service it.
If you are only using the stock, inadequate, trans cooler in front of the radiator you should replace it with a bigger one. It may buy you a little time...your trans will definitely like it.
