i have a cobra 18wx cb with front mount speaker. im trying to find a place to mount it in my truck. it is a 5spd so that eliminates the center hump option. anyone have any ideas and pics. i dont wanna cut up the dash or anything. thanks!
I mounted mine on the roof in the center, like in a big rig. I used either 1/4'' or 1/2'' (dont remember) self tapping sheet metal screws for the bracket.. 3 of them. I had a cobra night vision CB (thats a bigg'n) for a year or so, so itll definitely hold it. It btoke so I have a smaller one now. There is plenty of room in between the roof panels for the screws. (I have a 1988 F-150) I dont know what the roof looks like in the newer trucks but in the older ones its double sheet roof with a space in between. If you want a pic I can post it, but ill have to go take it first.
good idea volvo....i took out the ashtray and bracket and stuffed her in there. i never use the dang thing anyway. my radio is about 1/4" wider than the opening but a good shove got it in there good and tight. im using an external speaker and it is loud and clear. i tapped into the power for the cig lighter that was in the ashtray. i can get some pics if someone wants me to.
Awesome. I use my ashtray for storage (took out the actual ashtray part) but I did tap into my cigarette lighter for power. I ran the wires down the passenger A-pillar and grounded it to a screw there then ran the power down and across under the glove box. Glad it worked your way though, still plenty of room. External speakers are nice.
I had mine in the ashtray hole for quite a while. Takes a nice shove to get her in. Then I mounted it up on the roof using to self tapping sheet metal screws to put her on the roof. Works better I find, plus I often don't even have to take the mic off of the holder to talk. I now use my ashtray for an amp for my PA system, which is actually the original radio from the truck.
I mounted mine under the dash below the steering column
I used 2" wide sticky back velcro and a 2" wide nylon webbing strap and mounted to the plastic cover under the steering wheel, the one you have to remove to get to the fuse block. I put a snap fit buckle on the webbing to be able to take it off easy, and the velro keeps it from sliding around. I cut two slots in the plastic cover for the webbing and took it over the top of the steering column. It has been through some very rough roads and never had a problem, and it is easy to see and use. I'll try and take some pictures if anyone is interested.
It just takes a little imagination and a about $10 or $15 in parts and you're set. The hardest part was cutting the slots in the cover, I think I used a drill and tin snips. It took me quite a while to come up with the idea. Ford just didn't leave a good and easy spot to install a 2-way radio in our trucks. The older ones had metal lower dashes and some spots in the middle you could put them.

I'd be interested in pictures that sounds like an interesting mount.
mounted mine on the roof. pulled the headliner out as it had seen much better days. the sheet metal is sprayed (very lightly but still it is covered) so the the roof matches the body paint, sorta. Think I have a pic in my profile.
Isenegger, you definitely have more room in your truck for the CB than I did. I got the other interior style. Its a nice fit in there, too bad you couldnt get some sort of trim panel to cover the gap though. But hey, a radio is a radio.
