dual fuel tanks
There is a check valve in it that prevents fuel from being returned to the tank when the fuel pump is not energized. The check valve has failed, and as far as I know, it's only servicable by changing the entire pump assembly. You have to drop the tank to do it.
I would get the fuel pump assembly with the fuel level sender when you change it.
You can save a few bucks and get the pump without the sender, but murphy's law says that the level sender will fail soon after you change the pump....might as well do it while it's already apart.
I would also change the front pump.
I recommend using an OEM (Motorcraft) pump. I have had a 50/50 success rate with aftermarked vs OEM fuel pumps on my Fords.
I used a Borg-Warner on my 91 F-250 and it's lasted 100K miles, but the BW pump on the wife's Taurus lasted about 2 months.....
This is a recall issue on the older trucks, but it's probably too late now to have Ford do anything about it....
