I have a 1963 F100. I got the truck back home and put on the parking brake, as I didn't want it to roll out of the garage (my 2 little girls love playing in the cab). My problem is that after shifting it out of park, I realized that the brake is not engaged, but the handle is out all the way. After checking the issue I found that the cable inside the cab is binding at the exit point to the engine compartment. Does anyone know of any way to fix the cable, or would I be best off removing the current one and replacing it with a new? I'm not even sure if the brake is dead, or if it is just a wiring issue.
jsimon23, You may need a helper to pull the hand brake while you watch it move under the truck. Penetrants like PB Blaster sprayed on the cable where it leaves the housing can help loosen up a stuck cable.
The cable could be stretched and although you are pulling the handle it may not be transferring to the rear drum.
The rear loop can be tightened if needed. A good diagnoses is a must.
Jowilker, It's not so much an issue of the brake not holding (although that will need to be tackled as well), but mostly that the cable inside the cab is kinked when I try to push it. Do you think I should see about removing the cables and getting new/replacement cables, or do you think I can work out the bend in the cable?
I'm in Greensboro if you ever feel like making a trek west.
if you need parts quick, call Tom at Flashback F100's in Reidsville, 30 minutes away from you. the man has "everything" , both new and used. be sure to call first, he is on the road looking for parts and car meets. i am in Horsepasture Va, 50 miles north of you,
"I'm in Greensboro if you ever feel like making a trek west." I smiled when I read that, because it reminded me of folk saying you never call.
If the cable is kinking it sounds to me like it is not connected below the truck. You really need to spray your favorite PS Blaster like product on the cable, then work it back and forth until it runs free. I would not try pulling it out. IMHO

Thanks all for the help. Looks like I will have to try and pull the current cable and replace with a new one. I think the kink in the cable might be too much for me to reuse.
