Looks like one of my bulbs is out on my 97 Expy and it's time to replace. The bulb has been out since I bought it and haven't given it much concern as a tune up and other small mechanical things needed attention first. Now that my vehicle has been running great (knock on wood), it's time I start focusing on some of the smaller things I've noticed.
My guess is that all of the bulbs behind my gauges are original and have slowly dimmed over the years and I could benefit from from a brighter display. I did a few searches and nothing so far but no "how-to" threads except the Odometer Blackout fix.
My question is: what needs to be removed in order to pull the panel out to access the bulbs? This thread - http://www.fordf150.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64457 - shows what screws to remove for the housing and to "remove the faceplate" but not not a whole lot more. Does the plastic trim around the column need to be removed? I'd like to get a ball park idea what what to expect before attempting.
you want to follow the "odometer fix" thread to get the whole cluster out since the bulbs are on the back. Depending on the year, you might need to then take off the back plate, similar to fixing the cold solder joints. I don't think you can replace them without getting the whole thing right out of the dashboard. Once it's out, they are simply little snap in type bulbs
