No Speedomerter drive?
I lost my VSS signal and the Speedometer quit. I pulled the little 'device' out of the short stubby tailshaft and spun it over with a drill. Wife said I was going 25 Mph.
So that part works.
I put it back and went for a test drive. Still the speedometer don't work!
Pulled it back out and reached into the hole with my finger, and I can spin the drive gear freely in both directions.
I hope somebody can come up with a fix that wont cost me a bundle, and something I can do for myself.
Then you probably will need to replace the speedo drive gear. It's plastic and will slip off the shaft once the extension housing is out of the way. The new one will slip on.
I'm really stuck for money right now and was afraid I was going to be without a Speedo for a long time (till I win the lotto) but with this info maybe I can handle it.
Is this a normal thing? Does Ford have a "Chrysler" type of underengineering problem here?
thanks.
is the gizmo a little tight to turn such that it put a strain on the drive gear?
Its the hub of the drive gear that seems to be loose. I can also move it fore and aft just a bit.
Now that I know it can be fixed without a major tear down, I just cant wait to get that end plate off and see whats what in there.
D'y know that in all my years of owning and working on vehicles, this is the very first Speedometer failure from something inside the Transmission or Transfer case.
Cables yeah. Bunches of them and even a couple Meters have failed, but never the drive gear inside the Trans..! Never.
Note that only a couple guys responded. That is also an indicator of how infrequently this happens. I cant wait to see what caused this.
There is a wire coming through the tail shaft that I had to cut and splice when the time comes.
The Speedo drive gear was toofless. All the teeth are rounded off.
To get it off, you have to remove a big spring clip that grips the shaft in front of the Plastic gear. Then you can slide the Speedo drive gear forward enough that a small Stainless Ball will fall out in your hand. Then the Drive gear slides right off the shaft.
Heres three photos of the two gears. Bummer! I priced ONE Spark plug wire today. They wanted $24 for the #4 Wire. That'd make a set right at $200.
I wonder what they are gonna ask for this set of Speedo gears? Is there any other place I can go for small parts like this?

The small one for the sensor/genorator is only $5. But the Big on that slips onto the output shaft is $32.
Two 'sacrificial' plastic parts...$41 n' change. That's arrogant.
That's the big guys saying its our product, we'll rape you as we see fit. We know you'll keep coming back no matter how mad you get!
So the parts are on order.

I need to know what oil my transfer case takes now, and I can get this thing down off the Ramps and check out my Cruise control etc with the Speedo working.
