New guy with 64 - need engine suggestions
New to the site and am glad I found it. Just picked up a 64 Custom Cab shorty and am looking forward to getting it going.

As you can see, no motor or tranny:

In decent shape for the most part:

Anyone know how to fix this hood so I can reuse it. Or is it toast?

Now for the big question. I want to put a 300 six in it. I do want to use it as a truck and like the reliability of the big block six. Found an 83 model at a junkyard and was told this is a good option because it has got hardened valve seats and still runs a carb. Any thoughts? As you can see from above, I don't really have ANY motor mounts at all and have not seen a "kit" to put the 300 six in a 64 in any of the catalogues.
Any help is appreciated!
The 83 is a good choice. A little work can make the ol 300 a bit snappier to boot.
People tend to slam the heavy hood down which...over time...causes the hood lock plate to sag.
The other problem has been...since these trucks were new...is the safety catch doesn't always catch.
Considering these two factors, having the hood fly up when drivin' down the road...while not a common occurence, is not un-common either.
Depending on speed, the hood can fly up, bend backwards and then hit the top of the cab smashing the windshield in the process.
IMO: Replace the hood and hinges. The hinges have not only been bent and stretched, but where they mount to the hood has been all torn up.
The hood is the same 1961/66, and fits all F100/700's.
The right/left hood hinges are the same 1961/66 and fit all F100/1100's.
You shouldn't have too much trouble finding these parts in TX, where more Ford trucks have been sold than in any other state...since day one thru today.
I have been hitting some local salvage yards and think it is going to be pretty easy to find most parts- including a replacement hood. As far as the motor goes, I appreciate the tip and am looking for anyone else who has made this swap.
You guys are great.
