I've got a 2005 Excursion with the 6.0L PSD. I have a couple fuel options in my area, and I'm looking for an opinion as to which to use. No matter what I'll be using the Power Service additive. There are three choices, Ultra Low Sulfur (15ppm or less), Low Sulfur (500ppm or less), or Gold Diesel which is an Ultra Low Sulfur with some sort of additive package. If the engine was made in 2004, which was pre-Ultra Low Sulfur, would it be better for the engine to run the Low Sulfur? Or should I run the Ultra Low? Should I believe that the Gold Diesel claims of an additive package that increases power and mileage by 5%? Thanks.
What is interesting is that Ford recommends a minimum of 45 cetane. Even this Gold Diesel doesn't guarantee high enough cetane for Ford.
I say use an additive and try either the ULSD or the Gold Diesel - whichever one is the lowest cost per mile driven.
I would not use the LSD (certainly just my opinion - no facts to know for sure) - I think that the LSD resulted in higher potential to clog EGR systems. Of course if you do not have an EGR system, then use whatever is cheapest. I used to believe that the LSD was better for your injectors (and it probably was). After looking at my EGR valve at 27k miles and at 50k miles - something improved in the last 23k miles. It could have been that my places to fill up all quit carrying LSD, so I had to use the ULSD.
