Suitable Auto Jumpstart

I am looking into getting one of those portable jump starters in case I ever get stranded on the side of the road. Does anyone know of a suitable jump starter for me to get? I have no idea how many amps I need and I thought I would ask the professionals here. I figure at least one person here has to have experience with it and will be able to help me out.
Thanks for your help.

I can't believe it. No one has experience with any of these? It sounds like a good idea, but I have no idea where to start with what would be suitable for an expedition.

I bought one from Harbor Freight 3 years ago. It's the larger 24 AH version without the compressor, inverter, etc. I have a deep cycle battery in my truck because I regularly drain the battery (camping with my 1000watt stereo). I start the truck with this jumper about 10 - 15 times per year! I also use it to watch movies in the tent, charge cell phones, etc.

On a single charge, it will easily start my truck 5x during a long weekend. The only way I have been able to drain the battery is by powering my electric blanket overnight. Now that's camping!

I have had two jump boxes for my boat. Not sure of the details off hand, but the first was the cheapest one they had at the store, which is why I had to buy the second. I went to the other side of the shelf for the new one and it has been flawless, and boats are very hard to start if they have been sitting. Much more so than a car. Any boost box is only as good as the person who has to remember to pull it in occasionally. Why the concern? Carrying one 24/7 seems to be a bit of overkill.

I looked at the harbor freight website and the one that sounded like what you were talking about is this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=40615 . Does that sound right?

alwaysfords41, when you have time can you check which one you have? As for why I want to carry it, I have always been one for preparing for emergency situations. I just think that its a good idea to keep it on hand just in case.

This is the one I have. Among the obvious uses, I recently used it right before a pending thunderstorm to raise a driver's power window that wouldn't go up with the switch. The 300 watt A/C inverter is rather handy at times too. I powered a 22watt CFL lamp during a recent power outage here. It lit my house up rather nicely.
