okay so i just got my new truck home... its an 88 f-350 dually c&c, 7.3 n/a. my question is... will a regular dually bed go right on this? i didnt notice any holes in the frame rails for a bed to bolt onto. i believe it had a steel flatbed all it's life (signs of black paint on the cab backside). i am having my doubts...
i found a 95 dually bed in PERFECT shape for $500.00 i would like to use.
mike potts,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Cab and chassis frame is 34" wide outside to outside.
Stock pickup frame width (dually or regular box) is 37.5".
Also cab and chassis frames are straight on top from the cab back, regular pickup frames are not.
We will answer any question about any part of an IDI diesel truck.
that is what i was afraid of, i noticed the frame was flat on top and thought that was a little odd. looks like i will be building a flatbed. thanks for the reply!
You can use the pickup truck bed, you'll need to drill new holes a few inches inboard of where they are from the factory, and you'll have to use some spacers between the frame rails and the two bed crossmembers that sit above the axle. The straight frame rails will make the bed sit a bit higher than where it is on a regular pickup truck, but you can install a small body lift under he cab to make it match. There was actually an F-superduty truck on ebay a few days back, it had a pickup truck bed on it that was extended about 2 feet in the front so it matched the truck's longer wheelbase, that truck was absolutely gorgeous methinks...
i bought this truck on ebay as well, it is a little rough around the edges but, it does have a jasper crate engine with about 50,000 mi. it runs and drives perfect! since i actually wanted a supercab and this cab has some rust, plus i wanted to update wih the newer (93 and up) bodywork, i think i am gonna look around for an extracab with front clip, and just build a flatbed on the remainder of the frame. seems like alot of replacing on a truck i just bought, but i got this for only $850.00.
okay... so i think out loud here, and wondering... if i were to find a supercab and set it in place of my single cab, i realize i would have to add mounts for the additional part of the cab but, would the original mounts line up on the supercab?
I'm pretty sure they will. I'd be concerned with the rear cab clearing over the frame rails, may need a small body lift in the factory mounts for that.
a little update... ive been working on the flat bed, at this point ive got about $15.00 in this bed, heres some pics... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3366241
