transfercase question

hi my friend has a 04 f150 4x4 with the 4.6 and its making this real bad noise like the transfercase is trying to engage it self even thou the *** is switched to 2H but when she switches it to 4H the noise goes away.... is it common for the motors in these transfercases to go bad? its only got 50,000 miles or so and she doesn't beat on her truck at all...

Sound like it is the control module on the firewall.(IWE, i think)
Someone with more knowledge then I will chime in shortly.
