The CEL came on a couple of days ago and the local parts store read the code as fuel too lean bank 1 and bank 2. He said to start with vacume hoses and cleared the CEL for me. Yesterday I checked under the hood and there it was - the hose to the left valve cover was list sitting off the end of the coupler. So this morning on the way in to work the CEL came on again when I was sitting at a light. Arrrggghhhh!!! Anyway, can anyone suggest other things to look at? Should I not assume it's the same code? Oh yeah, this is on my 2002 Sport Trac with the 4.0 engine.
It could be a different code. You should get your own code reader, but for now just take it back to the parts store and have them read it again. There could be other leaks. The upper intake manifold can leak too.
I should have researched the forum before pestering all of you guys. Bear River had a lengthy explaination in a post back in May that explained the processes of the computer, which I appreciated being an IT guy. Getting a code reader is probably a good idea since all of our Fords are older and things will start to fail. I'll re-check the vacume lines for something that was less obvious and clean the MAF sensor for starters.
CEL mystery solved. When I went back to the parts store, the code said bank 1 lean but not back 2. What I discovered was that in addition to the hose off the right valve cover that I fixed, a 90 degree rubber elbow to the other valve cover (joined by a plactic tube that goes around the back side of the intake) was collapsed and split. After replacing the $36 beast the CEL is out for good.
