What made you buy your Excursion?
What made you buy your Excursion?
I just wanted to share my story and hear others stories.
I've always like the Excursion, just not enough to make me trade my Expedition in for one, at least not at the time. Well, on my first deployment to Afghanistan my job was to be Personal Security Officer for an Army General. My vehicle, a 2005 up-armered Ford Excursion 6.0 PSD. The thing had 5k lbs of armor on it, three inch thick glass through out. Stock axles, frame, suspension, and rims. Only mods were run flat tires and the armor. I was in love with this thing!
Well, one day I had to drive the General to another compound off camp. We were driving up one of the main roads when I saw a vehicle reclessly racing up from behind me swerving back and forth wildly. I stumped the peddle, ssinking myself, my a driver, the General, his Aide, and the tirp into their sits. This thing took off like a fighter jet. We went from 35kph to 90kph in like 3 seconds (the gauges were in kph). I'm flying through the busy Kubal traffic, leaving our wouldbe assasin in my dust. Boom! An explosion!
The vehicle speeding up from the rear was a VBIED (vehicle born improvised explosive devise), since he could catch me he went after another vehicle going in the opossite direction. A Ford Excursion saved my life!
My mind was made up the next vehicle I would would be a diesel Excursion. 5 months after my deployment I traded my 2003 Frod Expidition in for my 2003 Ford Excursion 6.0. I also have 4 kids, a wife, and a great dane, so the space helps to.
Hope you enjoyed my story,
JayC

That's my special moment for the day. And remember, spell check works when you use it, LOL!
I bought mine for the looks and the towing capacity. I've had 3 Expeditions - still have the 07 until the lease runs out. My towing needs have simply increased over the year and needed more than the Expy could tow. My current boat and trailer is approx 10k pounds so wanted to be legal and safe while towing around. I also use the thing to haul things around town - picking up things for the shop, etc. The Expy could do it but only with the 3rd seat folded down. I wish I could swap a few things from the Expy over - leather is a bit nicer, sunroof will be missed, ac on the seats is nice!, the newer dash designs are nice and my wife will miss the dual climate control. That said though - the whole family is in love with the X - not a single regret from all of us. That includes the 2 big dumb dogs I haul around all the time!
I maxed out my towing capacity on my '98 XLT Explorer and needed more. The Expedition was about the same wheelbase and I wanted more room inside. The Excursion gives me better towing and just more cargo room. My company pays the gas bill so it's a no brainer since I need it to tow my 7500lb company trailer longer distances, Mike.
this is my dream car and i finally was able to purchase it!!!! spent a few months looking for the right one and finally made my decision on my 2005 limited V10 4x4! i love my truck and for once in my life i am satisfied with what i drive! i am going to be buying a boat soon and also i am going to take a look at a 2000 X 4x4 7.3l with 585,000 miles on it..... they guy is selling it to me for $1200..... i think i am going to be bagging this one so that my lifted 2005 can trailer it!!!!

I've wanted one even when they were made by Centurian. The biggest thing on the road, this was a no brainer when I found it on Ebay, 5 miles from my house. I've since lifted it
, and replaced the motor
, and still love the thing.

Size, and somewhat of a perceived safety factor.
If a drunk driver in a Tahoe is going to hit me headon at 60 mph, I wanna be in something big, not a Toyota Corolla matchbox. See below......

Four people are dead after an early Sunday morning head-on collision between an SUV and a sedan on Route 3 near Stevensburg.
State Police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler said the accident was reported around 2:50 a.m. The deceased are Tyler Scott Harlow, 20, and Joseph Lee Sahnow, 20, both of Ruckersville, Tianna V. Jones, 19, of Stanardsville, and James B. Cook, 21, of Marshfield, Vt.
Tyler said all four died at the scene about one-tenth of a mile east of Route 739 (Clay Hill Road).
A fifth passenger in the Toyota, 27-year-old Howard John Steiniger of Fredericksburg, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg before being transferred to a Richmond hospital. His condition was not available Sunday evening.
According to Tyler, 29-year-old Eugene T. Green of Culpeper was driving the wrong way, headed westbound in the eastbound lane of the two lane stretch of highway. Green was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. The SUV struck the 2004 Toyota Corolla sedan being driven by Harlow.
Green, who Tyler said was not wearing a seatbelt, was also taken to Mary Washington Hospital. Green’s condition was also not available Sunday evening.
The accident prompted authorities to close the highway and detour traffic for about six hours while they cleared the scene and investigated the incident.
The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Company, Richardsville Rescue Squad and Culpeper County paramedics were also called to the scene.
“All these agencies are of a big help to the Virginia State Police,” Tyler said.
Tyler said the State Police’s accident reconstruction team from the Culpeper division headquarters also responded, along with Culpeper County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gary Close.
Alcohol is a suspected factor in the accident, which remains under investigation. It was not clear Sunday evening if or when charges might be filed.
Route 3 is the main highway linking Culpeper and Fredericksburg. Eastbound from Culpeper, the four-lane highway becomes two lanes near Stevensburg for several miles before widening to four lanes again near Richardsville.

Jay, thank you for your service......i upgraded from a 1998 gmc suburban 1500 (great vehicle, btw) for my 2001 EX ( the "Queen Mary") for better towing capacity ... the burb 6 - 6.5k ... the EX 10k. i have a 30ft fleetwood prowler (6500 lbs) that i want to upgrade to a 34ft camper with two slide outs (near 8000 lbs).
Number one reason:

Here's why my wife drives her GC (Plus, because the X is too big for her):

And for added measure... Here's why I'm 71-4R3SONS:

... And where the 71 came from:

Sadly... I sold 71 to finish the basement for my boys. The X replaced BIGRRRED because 3 boys may fit in the rear seat of a SUPERCAB... But, it is not well advised.

Like many who have responded, I needed more towing capacity. My Expedition was great for towing my 6000# TT but when I upgraded to a 2 slide out, 30 foot, 9000# TT it was clear I needed a bigger truck and since I have 2 kids and my wife wanted to stay in an SUV and I'm a Ford guy the choice was clear. I loved it from the start but what made the truck was the u/b spring swap. Yes I said u (not v).
Jay - Yes, thanks for your service!
I doubt anyone will top your story. Hope the General was appreciative!
My (insignificant by comparison) tale...
The frame on my '90 F150 cracked yet again, opposite a repair on the other side. Due to rust, there wasn't enough metal left for the repair to be safe. Had to sell it cheap (with full disclosure) just before her 20th birthday.
The Ex tows my ****** 4x4 (see sig) like a dream!
