429 engine general info needed
This is a truck engine not HPerf car engine from the 70's.Anyways, bought an F800 box truck with a 429 engine. It is a 1988 with 4V.
My two main questions are:
1. What type of oil would you recommend. It is low mileage and doesn't appear to leak or burn much. Might be used winter and/or summer for hauling but not extremely heavy loads.
2. Not looking to do any mods or anything but does anyone have any idea as to the HP and torque ratings of the engine for this model year.
Thanks and any other relevant info regarding maintenance and/or trouble spots specific to the engine is appreciated.
You'll be glad you did.

Do you know what oil has been run in it? That's what I would stick with. Probably a 20-50 or similar. I ran that in my 300 and it didn't cause any mushroom clouds...
HP and torque-- low 200s for HP, mid to high 300s for torque.
Does it have a governor on it?
Those are generally low compression engines made to slog along year after year, vs. the car engines made to push pillow barges around or run the 1/4 mile.
I found a service manual in the truck and 10w30, 10w40 and a few others were recommended depending on climate etc. Doesn't get a lot of winter driving so I was considering 30w but i went with the 10w30.
Man that is a big oil pan..
thanks again to those that took the time to respond...and read.
Had the top end off my 460 engine doing head repairs, & after putting it back on, was going to prime the oil through the engine with a shaft & drill. Had 20/50 oil in the pan & it allmost burnt up a 3/8s drill trying to turn the oil pump.
Drill started smoking before there was any oil comming out at the rocker arms & wasnt but a second or two at that.
That gave me a new respect for what that little pin going through the dizzy gear & dizzy shaft has to do.
To thick of an oil & you end up shearing that pin trying to turn the oil pump & your parked beside the road going no where.
Then again, I may be over thinking it a bit.
20/50 being thick as it is, would probably take up some clearance in slitely worn bearings when it was cold, but would be slow getting to them on start ups & only be 20wt oil once the engine was up to temps.
