I just got a 77 F-250 4x4 Highboy and wanted to put 35" tires on it. I was told it needs a 4" lift to fit. 1st qustion: is that true, and 2nd, what is a good lift to put on.
thanx, BP
Your truck may or may not be a "highboy" due to the fact that it's a '77 and that's the year they changed the frame/suspension. Does it have a divorced transfer case? If so, it is one and yes, 35's will fit stock. Heck, I run 37's on mine with stock suspension. However, if you have the newer version '77 you will need those 4" of lift.
looks like everyone beat me to it but yes if its a true highboy you would be able to fit 35s without the 4" lift. but like they said if its not then yes u will need the lift
Hiboy is a Ford truck that came from the factory as having the following:
- Built from 1967 thru 1977.5.
- F-250.
- 4x4.
- Divorced transfer case.
Trucks that are NOT considered a Hiboy are:
- Any truck built after mid-1977. It goes by Consecutive Build Number in the VIN# anything built starting Y80001 is a 77 1/2. **
- Anything other than an F-250.
I know the term Highboy is explained in the "Read First" thread, but maybe it should just be a sticky thread of it's own so we don't have to go through this again.

OK, my VIN does Not start with the Y80001..., but I'm new to this whole Ford Highboy thing, I may sound stupid but, how do you tell if it has a divorced transfer case?
A divorced transfer case is not connected directly to the transmission. The divorced or "remote mount" unit will have a driveshaft that connects the trans to the t-case.
Three driveshafts total in a truck with a divorced transfer case.
OK, check, it does have a divorced transer case. So it is a "highboy", Sweet.
It only has 9.5/16.5's on it now, which I think = a 29" or 30" tire. I have checked around and I can get 35x12.5R16.5 BFG AT's or should I get 16 rims and tires?
