Only ATF Type F in old C4s ...?

Greetings from Germany !!!

I understand that Ford recommends only ATF in accordance with the Ford Spec M2C33F/G in older (i.e. pre '80) automatics. This, however, is hard to get over here in Germany. Gas stations and automotive parts shops only sell Dexron II and Dexron III. Only a few places have Type F.

I have a C4 in my 67 Mustang. It was rebuild by a local Ford shop here in Germany before I bought the car. I called the guy and he said he's always using Dexron II. Now I wonder if a normal rebuild would change those parts which are typically being damaged by ATF other than Type F ?!?!

I also just got a used old C4 for my 54 F100. Also here I wonder what to use. I sure can get Type F and get a quart or two more so that I always have something in reserve.

... or should I go with B&M Trick Shift which sells at $5.40 the quart (Type F is same price, Dexron may be cheaper, but not much)? Can I mix Trick Shift with Type F as well as Dexron II (which I have in the Mustang)? ... or should I drain the Mustang's C4 completely and go back to Type F or go to Trick Shift ?

In the very end I would prefer to have the same stuff in both my C4s. So either Type F or Trick Shift.

By the way, how do I get the oil completely out? Just dumping the pan won't do. Can I empty the torque converter without taking my car apart?

Too many questions! I am lost! Help!

THANX !!!:-X12

Only ATF Type F in old C4s ...?

A friend of mine who is a regular mechanic says that most of the ford units when rebuilt can be switched to DexronII or use type F, supposedly the clutch materials used in the new rebuild kits don't require the special type F friction modifiers.?????

Type F and TrickShift are fluids without any friction modifiers. If the transmission has original-type clutches and bands, it is going to slip with Dexron/Mercon. I don't know if normal rebuild parts change that.

... thanx troposcatter and Jim.:-)

Hmm, as for the "a rebuild tranny" would work with DexronII. This is what the tranny man said who rebuilt the one on the Mustang. It shifts so smooth you won't feel it.

And if you don't when and how it was rebuilt then Trick Shift would work always as it can be used with any other ATF, too.

Since Trick Shift has same price as Type F over here I guess I buy Trick Shift.

Maybe another post in the Transmission section will give some info on the rebuild.

Thanx again !!!
