i have 92 ford 5.0 302
van can any body tell me how can you test for amps
how do you do that using a multi meter
because i do not know what type it either its 95- or 195 amps
You will not have much luck trying to find out the peak amps that alternator can put out using a multimeter. You would have to put a load on it, spin it up to a rated RPM, and measure the voltage across the load and convert it to amps using ohm's law.
An alternator shop can test it if you remove it and take it in. I don't know if the auto parts places like Autozone can give you peak amps or just test to see if its good.
Unless someone replaced it with a larger than factory, it probably has a 95 or 135 amp unit.
You should be able to take the info off of the alternator and post it here and someone will probably tell you real quick what amp rating it is.
