The trans has developed a hard up-shift when normally accelerating, and the O/D light was flashing the other day while towing a boat. (I restarted the engine and the light stopped flashing).

No. However, the very basic scanners used by parts stores may not be capable enough to read "manufacturer-specific" codes. Still, it's worth a try to see what the store's reader will pull.
Worst-case, take it to any decent shop where the mechanic uses a Snap-On, Mac, or similar scanner. You'll pay for the service, but at least you'll be getting someone with the correct equipment to read the codes.
