[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-02 AT 04:21 AM (EST)]Is it safe to say that the synthetic oils offered by the major oil companies are actually hydroprocessed dino with the exception of Mobil 1 ?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-02 AT 11:57 AM (EST)]Probably not. Chevron lists a diester base. Others may be a blend. Mobil has not been 100% PAO for a while now.
Oops, Valvloline is another one. The MSDS for Synpower lists "HYDROTREATED HEAVY PARAFFINIC DISTILLATE" as the main ingredient.

I was under the impression it was 100% PAO plus additives. What do they substitute in place of the PAO base and what percentages?
I called Mobil a few months ago and asked them what "Tri-Synthetic" and "Super-Syn" meant. They didn't tell me the proportions, but both contain PAO, esters and alkylated napthalenes. "Super-Syn" has a different additive package for the API SL requirements. So, no 100% PAO anymore. Esters are also a "true" (group V) synthetic chemistry.
