My 56 now has the Ford car wheel bolt pattern like a lot of trucks do that have had suspension and rearend swaps. I found that some full size Dodge 2wd trucks also had the same pattern. So I now have 4 15 inch wheels and tires off a Dodge truck that I want to use on the 56. I am looking for smallFord hub caps that will fit the Dodge wheels. The "lumps" on the wheels that the caps pop over measure 8 and 7/8 inches to the out side. Therefore the caps need to be 8 and 7/8 inches inside. I would not have a problem with adding a little to the outside of the"lumps" to make a cap fit the wheels. I have been looking locally and watching e-bay . Can anybody tell me , or show me a picture of something that I can use. I would like to find some stainless or chrome caps , but would use painted caps if necessary. Thanks for any help you can give.
If you can figure out a way to get the original 48-56 Ford hubcaps to fit the Dodge wheels you should market it. I think there would be a lot of interest for guys who have the Volare suspensions. You would need some kind of insert that converts the Ford diameter to the Dodge. I tried a number of things to make them fit my Chrysler wheels (same as your Dodge) but no dice. I don't think there are any other small Ford hubcaps out there that are small enough to fit over the Chrysler nubs. Good luck with it and if you figure out a way I'd sure like to see it. I need a set for my truck too...
Someone [can't remember who] makes an original looking early Ford cap that is made to fit later style wheels with outside humps. Have no idea if they would fit yours. Joe
I have an original 56 cap and have spent some time looking and trying to figure out how to make it fit. I know that part of the inner ring of the cap would have to be removed. In between the lug holes on the Dodge wheels are holes that are approx 1/4 inch. I'm thinking some kind of adapter could be made and bolted there to hold the caps if I cut threads in the holes. I am aware of the repo caps that are made to fit Chevy rally wheels. Maybe they could be made to work. I've installed subframe suspensions and done frame swaps in less time than I will have invested in this hubcap swap. Thanks
You might also look into the hubcaps that fit the 48 through 56 Ford 3/4 ton pickups F-2 & F-250 as they are a little different from the 1/2 ton caps and just may work with the wider hub cap ring, aka bumps.
An update...I removed the retaining ring from a Ford cap , leaving approx 3/16 inch. The cap now pops over the "lumps" on the Dodge wheel. The lumps are big enough that the cap now actually goes behind the lump. With the wheel & tire off the truck , as they are now, I have to knock the cap off from the back side . I think they will stay on ok. I plan to bend the tip of an old screwdriver to make a tool for removing them when the wheels are on the truck.I plan to install the wheels on the truck tomorrow morning and modify the one other cap I have. Then some road miles will tell the tale. Thanks
