I just found this board at it looks awesome.. I have a 1997 f250 HD and it just started making a howling noise at acceleration and definitely has a little less power. I took the truck to a transmission shop and he said the tranny looks fine. Any ideas from here
Welcome to FTE Slim! Sounds like a very common problem. When you hear this noise what's happening is the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve is closing. To fix it for now until you learn more about your truck, do this.
Looking down over the top of the motor, there is a 2 wire connector running down the drivers side cylinder head, on the inner side (valley of the motor) You should find this wire right at the bottom of the compressor side of the turbo. (intake side) Just unplug it and take it for a drive. This should clear your problem. If it does not, you may have a boost leak and I'll help you look for it too. But I'm betting unplugging the ebpv will cure it. Also, it's only function is to help warm the motor up in cold climates. So you really shouldn't need it right now. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the info RubberDuck. I just pulled the connector and took it for a drive. It howled for the first minute or so then stopped. I will drive it to work tomorrow and report back what happened.
Do you have any mods on your truck? Curious if you have an intercooler installed. If so look at all the boot connections. They will howl and loose power when loose.
