Tranny question
Tranny question
Anyone know how much power and torque my stock tranny can take? I plan on making some mild upgrades to my engine i.e. new carb, intake, headers and possibly a mild cam. Any info and expirences would be ord great. Almost forgot.....1964 F100 2wd, with 292 and 3 on the tree.
Think you can verify the actual 3 speed mounted? There are a few flavors out there including one with a overdrive function. Pull some casting #'s off of it to post on here and it might be easier guesstimate which one you have if the data tag is long gone. Or losts of picture can speak more.
I work nights, so I will get those cast # soon. Garbz2, thanks for the info on the cam. I plan on doing a complete rebuild on the motor, can you recomend a cam? Somthing mild, just looking for a bit more power.
There's only two possible 3 speed manual transmissions a 1964 F100 could have...as original.
1) Ford Type 3.03 3 Speed all Syncromesh Manual Transmission.
2) Borg Warner T-86 3 Speed Manual Transmission with Overdrive
The 3.03 was used in F100/250's from 1963 thru 1996, 1967/91 F350's, 1966/77 Bronco's, 1969/74 Econolines.
Dozens of different passenger cars 1963/80, including 1963 T-Bird 390 4V & 6V, 1963/67 Galaxie 390 4V, 6V and 8V.
6V = 3 2V carbs / 8V = dual 4V carbs.

Hey Will,
I don't know about the tag # you have, but do you have a picture of it?
Here is a link to a picture of what I think you may have:

It's an aluminum, toploader style, with the shift tower out the top.
It is model: T170FT (Code-RTS) and is a 4-speed with 4th being Overdrive.

Nope as it is either a SROD or TOD and has the incorrect bolt pattern and input shaft length. All that fits the 64 down bell ousing and pattern pattern are 64 down transmissions.
Check out John Mummerts site for a 223 kit to mount a T5 out of a mid eighties mustang with a six.

The chances of finding all the parts NOS, or in decent used condition from any of these cars will be slim.
F100/350's, Econolines, Bronco's and the other passsenger cars: The shift lever is on the steering column.
Didn't the 3.03 also come in '67+ Mustangs with the six cylinder? Maybe find a guy changing over to a V8 drivetrain? But I'd think you might be looking for awhile before you found a complete set-up.
Floor Shifter
Well Maverick/Comet and Granada/Monarch also had optional floorshifter for the 3.03, but they are rare. I had to buy a Mustangone for the floor shift. And yes, 67 up Mustangs used the 3.03 with the sixes. Earliest use I know of the 3.03 with a six was the 170Bronco's.
