A lot of people here seem to have an opinion about Lucas additives, but how many have actually used it? What was your experience? If you haven't used it, tell us why you think it sucks.

Jared, how about giving us one more option?

Like: Never used it, just didn't see any reason to.

Sorry, you'll have to edit it. It has to be edited within 60 minutes of posting. I was trying to think of other topics, and that's almost what the third one was.

Lucas: Love or Hate?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-14-03 AT 08:26 PM (EST)]My 92 Crown Vic was T-boned a few years ago and the power steering pump really howled after impact. I had nothing to lose so I added some Lucas power steering stuff in it. As I poured it in the pump gurgled a few times and shut up. Nearly 100,000 miles later, I haven't replaced the pump and it is still quite.

Haven't used any of the other Lucas products but I liked that one.

I haven't used it, and I think I have a good reason not to. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here, but here goes. Most of us have seen that little display in the stores, the one with the gears. Spin the one with strait oil in it, and all the gears get lubricated. Spin the one with the percentage of Lucas in it, you get this film stretched out from the gears. That tells me a number of things. One, it consists mostly of polymer, or heavy oil, or some mixture of the two. This tells me it wont be good for your bearings unless they're shot, in which case it MIGHT be of some benefit, as it might increase your oil pressure to a workable point for another few miles. Second, these gears spin at a max of about 100 rpm. Your engine, on the other hand, spins much faster. Think about how much foam that stuff must be making in the crankcase if it makes that much film on those gears going that slow. Now theres probably enough oil in there for it to get mostly separated out at lower engine speeds so the oil pump picks up pure oil, but I dont want my engine sucking foam at 6000 rpm. Agree or disagree, this is why I dont use it. That and the only thing that belongs in the crankcase is oil of the right viscosity.

Lucas oil stabilizer is good in a worn-out high-mileage engine but is otherwise unnecessary.

i use the oil stabilizer in my Bronco II with 400,000+ miles on it. it was using about 3-4 qts of oil every 3000 miles and now it is using less than a qt. the engine also sounds much better.:-)

Thought I had a shudder problem in my 5R55E. It wasn't the transmission. If you feel the need to to use a "STP like" thickener for seals I guess it is ok. Looks like it would be better for power steering noise. Don't think I would use it again in a tranny.
