I've done some searching but haven't found all the info yet. My 97's got a oil leak near the valley, definately engine oil. Appears that it could be coming from the bottom of the turbo, going to do some scrubbing and watch it for a week or so. How much of a PIA is it to do pedistal O rings?
Next question is how much play if any is OK for the comp wheel? I've got a slight amout of up and down play. Still boosting good, but don't want a big bang either.
How many miles are on that turbo? Is there evidence that the wheel is touching the sides of the housing? Is there any evidence of "Dusting to the fins? Chips? Bending?
I f the above is NO then I don't believe that you have a problem as yet. I don't know just what your definition of a "Slight up and Down" motion is, you should also have the same amount of side to side play.
Changing the seals on the pedestal is a slight PITA but not that bad. There are other areas around the turbo & pedestal that will/can leak oil. Check everything carefully.
121,000 miles. Their isn't any evidence of contact with the housing, or any bent, cracked, chiped, dusted fins. I couldn't tell if the up down movement was there side to side or not (my clubs don't fit in there too well) LOL The movement is minimal, I'll keep an eye on it for any scratching or contact with the housing. I checked my 96 but didn't notice it in that turbo (74k miles).
I'm hoping that if it is the housing O rings they will stay a slow leak until clutch time to make things easier....
