7.3 Shuts off

I have a 2000 F250 with a 7.3. It just started this. while going down road engine acts as if it is running out of fuel and trys to shut down. If I sit there and let it idle it will shut down as if it ran out of fuel. Engine will not restart unless I turn off key then back on and wait for "wait to start" light to go off. When this did happen I left key on and loosened fuel filter cap and had all kinds of pressure and fuel.
Engine runs fine and idles fine with the exception of the shut down. Could this be some kind of electrical problem or a fuel pump acting up? Truck has 175,000 miles on it and never gave me any problems. When this started I changed the fuel filter thinking that it was clogging up. Everything was clean.

It could be the CPS. Have you had the recall done? There is a possibility of a UVCH coming loose also.

The fuel pump is located right under the driver's seat on the frame rail.
When it is giving you trouble, park it and roll under the truck to see if it is still running.
The symptoms you are describing sound very much like loss of fuel pressure.
These engines operate at around 55psi.
There is still some left in the rails on the head for the injectors to use, even if the fuel pump shuts off.
That's why it continues to run, but very badly.
.
If the pump is still running, then you have a clogged filter screen inside the fuel pickup in the fuel tank.
The fuel pump relay will cut the power to the pump if the engine stalls, so the test must be done while the engine is still running.

No Recall done on this truck that I know of. To the best of my knowledge I was never notified of any recall.

Thanks, I kinda suspected a fuel pump or a clog in tank but wasn't sure if I had a pump relay problem or some other electrical issue.
Will check that and will post.
Thanks

Found the problem!!!
After checking the entire fuel system and finding no obvious problems, I decided to take Megawatt00's advice. I went ahead and changed out the CPS sensor. Truck started very quickly and kept on running, took it on a nice ride and had no problems!!!
Thanks to everyone for the great advise.

I'm having a similar issue with my 01 f250 but mine just recently killed and i can't get it started. I had cps changed no help I dropped tank and no restriction or clogged pick-up screen, i checked rail fuel pump and it powers up with key on and pumps fuel but not sure what pressure is. How can I check my fuel pessure to see if I have a weak fuel pump?

Look here: http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=217

You can find the fittings at places like lowes but kind of tricky to get the right fittings. I used a combination of fittings from lowes.

Before you do all that, is the "wait to start" light coming on when you switch on the ignition?

yes, it's coming on and seems to be working normally. The truck has been acting like the CPS was going bad again, I had the recall done at the dealership last year so I thought maybe a bad sensor, so for $28 I bought a new sensor and changed it but still the same.

2003 7.3 Power Stroke Diesil

I have the same truck and it has been sitting for one year because i can't figure out what is wrong with it. My truck is doing the same thing yours was. It will start up and run, but after you go a couple few miles it will shut off. I pull to the side of the road and wait 15mins and it will start back. But it will do the same thing again when you go a few more miles. It would sometimes drive all day and not shut off. However you never no when it's going to shut off. It done this for months and now it want start at all. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, I even straight wired an electric fuel pump on it and nothing changed. If you have figured out the problem please let me know so I can fix my 2003 F-250 Super Duty 7.3 diesil two wheel drive. Thank you for your time. My personal email is charlesduncan3@me.com. Please send me an email.
