1974 jack location

Hello gentlemen. Just picked up a 74 F100 4x4 and have a question. Where in the world was the original jack? It's lifted so I don't even know if the original jack will work.

This truck was advertised as a '75 390 Highboy w/ 3" factory lift. After a little research it turns out to be a '74 360 4x4 with 3.14 rear and 3.30 up front. Definitely light duty.

Did Ford ever do factory lifts on non-Highboys?

I'm tempted to drop it back down and the 33" tires need to go. Not interested in a mudder, but I would like to recondition it for another 35 years. It needs some interior work a little bodywork. Kicking around an AOD conversion. Should be fun. My oldman bought a 66 new and kept it until '93, so it's not too much culture shock. This site has already helped on a number of issues, so thanks for all the help past and future.

Here in the bottom right of the picture, you can see the bottle jack that came factory. This is on my 77 F150 Explorer Custom. I beleive they were all in this location from 73-79 model years. Also, WELCOME aboard!!

Definitely dangerous, unless I'm mistaken...your axle ratios should be the same from front to rear.

As far as the jack, mine is strapped to the driver's side front inner fender. It's just a little bottle jack, but mine is a 2WD. Since you are supposed to jack up any 4x4 or RWD vehicle under the spring plate on the axle, I would assume that the same bottle jack could be used for 2 or 4 wheel drive.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you much. Now I need to locate a bottle jack. Is it safe to assume the tire tool is the jack handle? If so, was there a certain place for it.

Reason I ask is behind the seat looks barren off any fixtures.

Also on the gears the tag inside the dr door says 3140 in back and 3300 up front. I figured that meant 3.14 and 3.30.

that's not the axel ratio, it's load capacity of the axels
there may?????still be metal tags on the center section covers that show the ratio
is it full time or part time 4wd?

those arent the axle codes. the jack handle clips on the top of the radiator support. it takes up the entire length of the rad support, so you cant miss it. its a long metal rod. i would recommend getting a small floor jack and storing it behind the seat instead of a bottle jack.

Welcome to FTE

As stated, those figures are the maximum axle capacities for the front/rear axles.

But, I think you've reversed the figures, as a 1957/79 F100 2WD/4WD has a minimum rear axle capacity of 3300 lbs.

The Dana 44's front axle capacity is a minimum of 3000 lbs.
---------------------------------------------------------
The same jack was used 1948/79 on F1/F100/F150's and 1978/79 Bronco's: D3TZ17080C replaced 8C17080.

This jack is obsolete as are the other parts. If someone is looking for a new original jack (D3TZ17080C):

GAYLEN C. WRIGHT FORD in Heber City UT has ONE / ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has ONE = 817-275-2381.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The same lug wrench (C2SZ17032C) was used 1948/96 on F1/F100/F150's, 1966/96 Bronco's. And...on most 1949/79 passenger cars.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The crank used to raise the jack up/down is the same 1967/79: C7TZ17081A. This is one looong piece.

DALE CARTER FORD in Eaton OH has ONE / B.F. WHITE MOTOR CO. in Stanton TX has ONE.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is another crank (82Y17081B) that also works which was used from 1938 thru today on many trucks. It's hinged, so it can be folded in two.

MSRP: $32.78 // FTE sponsor: y2kfordparts.com price: $23.60.
------------------------------------------------------------
The clamp (C7TZ17091A) used to retain the jack to the left fender apron is the same 1967/79.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has TEN = 800-543-4959.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Just for the heck of it, look inside the spare tire's wheel. The jack was stored there thru 1966, so one never knows.

The AXLE code is listed on the Warranty Plate, but Ford usually did not list the front axle code.

The Ford ID tag for the front axle will be found under one of the bolts that holds the inspection cover on. Do not be surprised if it's missing.

btw: No 390's were factory installed in any 4WD truck. 1968/76 F100/250 4WD: The only V8 available was the 360 2V.

There is no such thing as an F100 or F150 High Boy. High Boy's are 1967/76 and 1977 (before serial #Y20,001) F250 4WD's.

It has Warn hubs, but I haven't played with the 4wd yet. This week the radiator is going to a shop for repair and then I'll find out. It also has some kind of shimmy damper on the front axle that I've been told is not factory.

This truck was a mudder/toy. I have paperwork for the Fred Jones Ford Remanufacturing rebuild back in '99. The C4 is currently under warranty with a shop in OKC. From my research I figure that tranny won't hold up well to the big tires and offroad thrashing this truck has obviously seen.

Thanks again for the help.

Whether the C4 holds up...or not is im-material since your truck does not have one.

What 4WD F Series truck of any year came from the factory with a C4 transmission?

None.

What FE engine in a truck...or car...of any year came with a C4 transmission?

None.

Your truck has a C6.

The only 4WD vehicle from Ford that used a C4 were 1973/77 Bronco's which came with 302's.

So apparently the only things right on my transmission warranty are the vehicle model and VIN. They put down 302ci and C4.

After looking yes it's a C6. They may have dropped in a 390, the Fred Jones receipt says 390. So I have a little more research to do. Also the rearend has a tag and the front does not.

Fred Jones was (is?) FoMoCo's authorized rebuilder in TX, OK prolly other states as well.

Here in CA, and in OR, WA, AZ, NV, ID, HI, AK and etc., FoMoCo's authorized rebuilder is Genuine Parts Distributors aka GPD aka Tumador Engine.

I understand the cranks rides in front of the radiator, but everything is missing. What kind of hardware secured the crank?

I thought the lug wrench would be the crank, no? If not, any certain place for the lug wrench?

Picked up the Ford service manuals off Ebay on disc. If the guy isn't a fraud maybe they will help with illustrations.

Bumper jacks used on passenger cars are raised and lowered by the lug wrench, but trucks do not use bumper jacks, they use screw type bottle jacks which are placed under the vehicle.

Parts catalog shows two possible locations for the crank, clipped to the left fender inner apron, or to the core support. No part numbers are listed for the clips, the catalog says "improvise."

On cars with hood prop rods, the plastic clip that secures the rod when it's not in use may work.

the folding jack crank and the lug wrench were secured with a clamp under the seat on the passenger side, jack was on the drivers front inner fender as shown in posted pics

this is in a 76 F-250, and the handle and wrench had never been removed from under the seat
