any thoughts are greatly appreciated here. i have a 78 460 from my 2wd mounted in my 78 4wd. the 4wd is manual. i used a new 460 flywheel, 12 inch clutch kit also. L&L mounts for the motor, which seems lined up correctly, as the z bar is aligned from frame to bell housing. my problem is with the np 435. it seems to bind the motor to the point that i can't turn the motor over, even with the plugs out and using the crank bolt. could my input shaft be that out of shape? i can find all gears and neutral easily, but of course that is behind where i think the problem lies. thanks for any and all advice. steve.
No big deal-your input shaft is bottoming out on the end of the crankshaft.Pull it back apart and using a air cut-off wheel, take about 1/8 inch off the very end of the input.Make sure you grind a little bevel back into the end to make the shaft start into the pilot bushing easier.
Coulda been a lot worse-luckily the first time I encountered this scenario a good friend just happened by my shop when I was attempting to 460 my '76 highboy. He had experienced the same thing so he knew exactly what to do.L&L will tell you to buy their "special' bellhousing and their $500 flywheel because " a 390 flywheel absolutely won't work".Yeah,right-I've probably done 20-25 FE to 429/460 swaps using a 390 flywheel and they're still going strong.
I've done a few conversions and found this problem also. What I did is use 2 to 3 manual block plates. This spaces the trans back to keep from bottoming out into crank. The starter still works fine, more than half the bendix engages the flywheel.
