I have a 97" F350 DRW with 185k that I had surging problems with while pulling heavy loads. It would only surge while the engine was starting to lug down. I took it to my local diesel mech. and they told me it could be one of two things, the HPOP or the control valve for the HPOP. Being the valve was much cheaper I had them replace it, the problem is still there. I called them back and asked them if they checked the pressure of the HPOP and they said yes. I dont want to take my truck back to them, I am looking to take care of this myself now, I am a fairly good mechanic. I had to take off my Superchips tuner because the surging was so bad while towing, at the stock setting it is barely noticeable, only when the truck is running close to 3k and under load.
What should I be looking for?
If I am going to replace the HPOP I think I want to do an upgrade. I just dont want to replace it if that is not what the truck needs. I do have some fuel lines that are beginning to leak, I will be digging into that this weekend, I dont suppose that has anything to do with it?
