Dads pickup was grinding a little but took the tire off and looked at the dust shield.
Did not find anything but pried the shield and turned the rotor to see if anything dropped out..
But the rotor was loose on the hub.
Is that normal?
Also this past winter when it was in 2 wheel it felt like the front brakes were on.
Rear tires would spin real easy.
Caliper moves pretty smooth.
On a SRW when you remove the lug nuts, only the residual force from the calipers is gripping the rotor. The rotor shouldn't fall off, but it should wiggle about on the hub.
Did you spin the hub? It's possible you have a hub bearing assy failing. It would grind and might feel like it's offering resistance. However it should be getting really hot, there was a thread last week of a bad hub assy melting down a warn hub switch. It's definitely something to be aware of as your looking things over.
The rotor could be loose on the hub because the wheel isn't on but jack it up and grab the wheel at the top and shake it hard back and forth to make sure it is not loose (bad bearings).
After prying the dust shield to look in and did not find anything it has yet to grind/squeal.
Did spin it after it was all back together and other than being a little tight all was good.
The drive shaft going into the hub does have a bit of play in it.
Even on icy roads it bucks when in 4x4 on moderate turns.
Done this since new.
