Problem

Does anyone know why ignition solenoids continue to fail and more often than not fry the starter too?

I had one die this evening and hope when i replace it in the morning my starter is still good as it's only a few weeks old.. so was the solenoid

1970 F100 302

I have never 'jumped' the solenoid either.

any help would be appreciated greatly

There grounded thru there bases 90% of the time, and the most likely cause of your failure is do to poor grounding thru said base. try running a ground jumper from the clean base to the (-) of the batt, this should help. Only other thing I can think of without seeing it is your buying the cheapest you can ( Most of us do ) and its costing you for the cheap part.

You wouldn't believe how many peeps said to me that solenoids weren't or didn't need to be grounded. But they do need to be.

Oh Yes, one of the biggest issues is improper grounding, even thro its metel to metel, corrosion on the inner fender wall or paint can make it so it doesnt ground proper, also if the Barr to Body Ground has gone missing, this will also play havic with eletrics

I agree, Solenoid grounds to fender, Rust as you can imagine can play havoc with this ground, as well as a missing ground cable somewhere that grounds the body. Firewall to engine ground cable are the most comon body grounds. And usually the first ground wire to go missing. Engine swaps etc...

I replaced solenoid with a higher quality brass internal one (only $8.00 more), replaced ground cable from Bat to block and hardwire ground the solenoid to the neg bat terminal. when i get home next week I will look to replace the block to body ground strap. She did not start just clicked again, going to take starter off and get it tested next week. I feel a complete re-wire is in order for the old girl, sounds like a good reason to rebuild the 302 that's in her too.

Thanks for all the 'help'
