Hi,
I have a 71 F-250 highboy with a inline 6 300. I just bought it for $200 for my wifes B-Day. It doesnt run and had to be towed home. When I got it home I attempted to jump start it. It did not even turn over. No Electrical signs at all. I cleaned all of te connections and grounds and threw it back together to try again and still nothing. Any ideas on what could be going on? I really want to at least be able to start it on the 26th of june for her B-Day but it dosent really look all that hopeful at this point. Thanks for any info you may be able to contrtibute.
take the starter off and have it tested. also the solanoid (spelling?) could be bad, if that is the case you can short cut the key and get it to crank by bridging both big ends on the solanoid or the hot end to the small one closest to the hot end, smaller spark...
I tried to jump the solenoid and there was not a sound. I am going to take the starter in today and have it tested. With the solenoid not jumping does that mean that it is the solenoid?
Probably means it is something else because you eliminated the solenoid when you jumped the terminals. I would bet on the starter, if you know the battery is good. Good luck. Tom
I had the starter tested and it passed I had the battery charged and tested under load and it was droping to around 8 volts. I threw it in the truck anyways and and tried to start it with jumper cables and nothing. Then I took the positve lead from the jumpers and put it on the starter solenoid lug that goes to the starter and it would turn over but when I took the lead from the jumper cables and put the positive on the battery post on the starter solenoid and tried to turn the key nothing again. is there a way to test the ignition solenoid thing (the thing the key spins)? Does it sound like it could be the starter solenoid? any guidence is appreciated!
The battery cables are pretty fresh I put new terminals on too. I dont know much about the electrical systems in these vehicle but my gut is telling me it is the ignition cylinder. I dont know though.
Replace the battery, make sure it is fully charged, and will hold a charge.
Now from the tests you already have done, you can do the following proceedures. You already determined that the starter and the starter + cable is good.
A: Make sure the ground where the solenoid mounts is clean and tight. The solenoid grounds through the mount. Also check or replace the battery negative cables for proper clean grounds or damage.
B: Next check the Red/Blue wire at the solenoid "S" terminal, but unplugged for power when the ignition switch is in the start position. Someone will have to hold the key. If its got power, the ignition switch and wiring is good Go To Step C. If it doesn't check the Neutral safety switch located on the column, if automatic. and/or the ignition switch wires for power.
C: Replace the Red/Blue stripe wire, place the jumper cable on the battery lug side of the solenoid and the other end to the battery, or a 12 V power source. Try to start. If it starts, or if it cranks, the solenoid is good. Replace the positive battery cable. If it doesn't crank...
