For the past couple of days when starting my 2005 6.0 the rpms would go up and down a few hundred rpms and puff black smoke real bad. It would do this for about 30 seconds to a 1 minute and then run fine for the rest of the day. I went out this morning and all it does is turn over! Any suggestions before taking it to the dealer?????
I would agree, but only if there is a problem exist with warm/hot starts...cold starting does not seem to be the issue with the STC fitting in the HPOP.
How many miles on your truck? Check for codes. Could be the ICP sensor, clogged EGR, sticky turbo vanes or probably any other number of things. Codes would help narrow it down.
34,000 miles on the truck. I need to check for codes. there is a check engine light on. The autoparts store will let me borrow there reader but the truck needs to be in there parking lot which kind of sucks.
Is the FICM and the HPOP covered under the 5/100,000?
Yup. Be prepared to prove oil changes to the dealer.
Push the odometer button a few times to get engine hours. Multiply the hours by 25. Compare that total to actual miles. They should be close. BTW Truck should have had 6 oil changes by now.
I am going to see if I can hear the injectors with the key "on". From what I read this should tell me if it is the FICM correct?
Have an assistant turn the ignition to the "ON" position while your under the hood with your finger on an injector ... you'll be able to feel it "click-click-click". Then, have the assistant turn the engine over while you still have your finger on the injector ... see if you feel any "clicks" then.
Sounds just like what I went thru w/ my '04, but it got to the point of not starting. My EGR valve was clogged (which I cleaned up), but it still would not start. Turned out I needed a new FICM - which they covered under the 5/100k warranty w/ a $100 deduct, even though I was 30 days out of warranty.
I would get your truck to a Ford dealer asap, and have them go thru everything - EGR valve & cooler, along w/ the FCIM while you are still under warranty. We only get a 5yr/50k mile emissions warranty b/c the X GVWR is over 8500lbs. The 5yr/100k powertrain warranty actually covers more than I realized. FYI - retail on an EGR valve from Ford is $350 and the FICM is $800... warranty is good - you should consider an extended plan as well while you are still w/in the original warranty.
