Funny how you see one person's post and then you post something along the same line...anyway..

Ok so I was going to go and get my tranny flushed ('04 160k miles) and after doing some research I called the dealer to find out how they did their service (heated machine, filters..blah blah). Dude I spoke to said with this many miles he would recommend (strongly that is) to just drop the pan and change the filters, add new fluid. Looking at $250 for this job.
What say you? It sounds reasonable.. I'm not (currently) having ANY problems with the tranny.
Also I had him quote me for a coolant flush ($145).
Do the complete flush. If it's going to go out it will do it with old or new fluid. The purpose of the new is to prevent it from ging out. Varnish in old fluid will cause the solenoids to stick and burn out.
Apparently this dealership has done a few of these with high miles..said he's seen alot break afterwards. No real technical reason.
Not recommended for high mileage trans. to have flush done, unless the trans. has had regular service. If not,pan dump and filter change is recommended.
(I have seen an uncanny number of trans.fail after a high mileage/not maintained trans. flush.)
$250 for a dump and fill is more $ than a flush (here).
If your tranny has had regular tranny service before.. I would do the flush.
I just had mine done at the dealership and the flush was only $129.00 and included the external by-pass filter (or maybe I got whacked for $30.00 for the filter... I can't remember).
They only used Mercon SP fluid (which they should) and they raised it up and ran the tranny through all gears (forward and reverse) to ensure 100% fluid movement through the convertor and tranny.
I flush every 30,000 miles and flush and drain/refill every 60,000 miles (every other flush).
I also had my front and rear diff's done as well as the transfer case (Mercon V).
I now have 152,000 problem-free miles on my 2003 Excursion.
I would call around to several Ford dealers and get estimates for a flush and just a drain & re-fill... or both if done at the same time.
Usually when not regularly serviced and high miles the worry is that all of the junk that had made itself a home somewhere gets pushed out of its resting place and can get stuck in your shift solenoids and other valve body crevices.
Now this seems like the whole reason for the flush in the first place, but from what I know that is the concern they have. A lot of shops won't do flushes on high mile tranny's.
is 100,000miles to hi.
I think all the fluids were changed in this truck befor i bought it. they smell feel and look new. Theres not even any build up in the coolent resavor. The coolent is the right color.
