Im looking at buying a 4x2 2.0 4 cyl escape. Its a 2004 with 85000 miles. Are these things unbearably sluggish? I do a lot of driving so I assume it will get better mpg than the 3.0. Is this a vehicle to stay away from for around $4000 or will it be worthwhile.
Also, I live in snowy conditions for 4 months, but I have heard these handle ok in the snow. Can anyone make a statement on this?
What should I look for in test driving besindes the normal stuff.
I test-drove a front-wheel drive '04 Escape XLS with the 4 cylinder and manual tranny. Then I bought an XLT with the 3.0. I'm all for fuel economy but the 4 cylinder was underpowered for the vehicle in my opinion.
But, if you test drive it and are satisfied with the power, it may suit your needs. It will get four or five mpg better than the 3.0 liter version.
Four grand seems like a pretty good price if the car is in decent shape.
All of my Escapes have been FWD only and I've gone through five New England winters on stock tires without problem.
I drove an 08 rental (pretty sure it was a 4x4 as that was what insurance was replacing) and only realized it was a 4 cyl because the gas gauge was not moving toward E as quickly as on my 05 4x4 6 cyl. Had to look under the hood when I got home just to be sure.
I sometimes drive my roommate's 05 XLT with the 3.0L and front wheel drive. I have always personally preferred 4x4, but I'm impressed. I'm in Montana and get some significant snow, and it always handles the snow great. As far as mpg's, the v-6 can get into the mid 20's, which i think is great for an suv. I have never driven a 4 cylinder, but it might be perfect for what you need. One thing about the Escapes: they pretty much fall apart completly around 150k to 175k. Everything major goes wrong in that time.
Ok so i just got back from the test drive. I few dings and dents and a little rust inside the doors, the wheel wells were fine which is my fisrt problem with my car. He was cruising 60mph and realistically the fastest i SHOULD ever go is about 70ish on the thruway. Now I need to decide if I should get an escape or a ranger.
RANGER. They have been tried and true for much longer. They are easy to fix and parts are everywhere. That's just my two cents. I have owned several Fords, one of which was a 1991 Explorer 5 speed. The first gen Exploders were essentially a Ranger with an suv body. Great vehicle and simple to work on. One more thing- the Escape will most likely get better mpg's if that's one of your main concerns.
I am selling a great gas economy 4 cyl 2.3 4wd HYBRID, in NJ, but it is a little more than the 02 you are looking at, the 4cyl in this escape is really peepy and runs great, if it weren't for the payments and having 7-9 other vehicles I would definitely keep it, it impressed me when I drove it, but I believe that the hybrids haave different transmissions than the gas engine escapes.
