Some mornings after sitting for a day or so the pig will crank over for 10-12 seconds, and start to pour white smoke out the tale pipe before catching....more white smoke a tiny puff of black its running... its gotten steadily worse..... what do you all think???
i would start with glow plugs if its taking that long to fire.as far as the black smoke try changing or cleaning the air filter.with all the white smoke at startup its telling me you have a few dead glow plugs causing the cylinders not to entirely heat up and the black smoke is unburned fuel so by changing the air filter you will have more air to burn the fuel more efficiently.hope this helps.i figured i would explain my ideas so it makes sense
dont listen to this there is no computer to do anything to.wenuck i believe you are thinking powerstrokes.the link you gave is to a 6.0 powerstroke we are dealing with a way different animal.
s.p. test your glowplugs.to do this take the connector off the glowplug hook the testlight to the positive terminal on the battery and touch the glowplug with the other end if it lights its probably good.test every plug this way.this isnt a fool proof test but gives a good idea.and only replace with motorcraft beru plugs or you could have issues with plugs burning out and swelling causing you to pull the heads to remove dead plugs.
I'm thinking his IP is on its way out, when they wear out internally they start to retard the fuel injection timing, and when that happens you get harder starts and also lots of white smoke.

It certainly could be this, but I would start with the glow-plugs first.
I ALWAYS flash the computer on my IDI after every repair... right after I change the blinker fluid.
White smoke.
Retarded timing
Air in the fuel system
Leaking injectors
Glow plugs not working
Coolant in the cylinders
Since it is a 7.3, what does the white smoke smell like?
Fuel or sweet would be the answers you get to pick from.
In the fuel area, white fuel smelling smoke is unburned fuel, it never got hot enough to ignite.
Black smoke is incomplete combustion, to much fuel for the amount of air in the cylinder.
Lots of white smoke while cranking, if it smells like fuel means excess fuel that was never ignited is in the cylinder when the engine does start.
So a couple puffs of black would be normal once it started firing.
1. Start cheap, smell the white smoke, if it smells like fuel, then go to the line 3.
2. If it smells sweet, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars, and post back you are going to cavitation/blown head gasket jail.
3. Then go the next cheapest, test and replace any burnt glow plugs, you will need them anyway.
4. After they were working, if you still have white smoke I would probably pull the injectors looking for wet tips since they are also cheaper than an IP.
Dave S. the white smoke smells like Diesel, and will make your eyes water...
Im thinking about taking my spare Inj. pump to a inj. shop and having them test it.....Or just installing it to see if it helps..(supposed to be good)
I also just picked up a set of new injectors for $80. wish they were code G not stock, (mine were replaced last summer 10-12000 mi. along with all new beru GP.s)
I am wondering about my Inj. pump.... or do I just WANT a new one???
!!!thanks guys!!!
yeah its one of those catch 22's. save money in the beginning or save more later. all depends, thanks for the info though gashog. are you in pcola? i used to live there, that would make things easier!!! hahaha
