I have a 2002 F350 crew cab with the 7.3L turbo diesel. I was pulling my boat home from vacation and about 4 hours into the drive lost all power. the engine still idled but when i tired to accelerate nothing but smoke poured out of the exhaust and the truck went no where. After waiting for 2 hours for the tow truck and an hour after letting it sit in the drive way i started it and it ran fine no problems and has continued to run fine for the last 3 days.
It sounded like the turbo had completely been bypassed it would not wind up and the truck was idling very rough. I believe the problem was the wastegate valve getting stuck open? what would cause this? exhaust bypass sensor? I have limited diesel knowledge and would greatly appreciate any help.
Welcome man! First try checking your turbo by pulling off the intake and moving the turbo shaft. It should move up, down, side to side slightly without the the fins hitting the housing, but it shouldn't move in and out at all. Take a look and that and let us know what you find. Good luck man.

Wow, it's the season for loose valve cover wiring harnesses!

I don't think it is the turbo, Clay.
Turbo won't spool if it's missing a cylinder, not enough exhaust heat generated to drive the turbo.
I would check the UVCH, if you can get it scanned that would help. Dan, when my UVCH went I just got a loss of power no smoke, even when I floored it. What about a sticking injector?
Under Valve Cover Harness.
Its that big bundle wire that connects to both valve covers. I'm sure someone with a picture will post it up here for you. There is a plug under the valve cover that usually comes loose.
The plug may have cooled down enough to make contact again. I would say its temporary.
This sounds like a boost leak that some how "fixed itself". Is that even possible? Black smoke means he's getting lots of fuel, but no air. Since he's getting fuel, that leads me to believe the injectors are doing their job. Now, can anyone come up with a boost leak that would be intermittent? I don't think the wastegate being stuck open is enough, but could be wrong...
